Eco-Schools Bangladesh

What is Eco-Schools?
Eco-Schools is a global programme, recognized by the UNDESA – UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005 – 2014), that empowers students to take an active role in promoting sustainability in their schools and communities.
The programme provides a framework for schools to integrate environmental education into their curriculum and operations, with the goal of creating a more sustainable future.
Launched by Probha Aurora in August 2023
As the national operator, Probha Aurora is building a whole-school approach to environmental education across the country.
Rationale
- Bangladesh is endowed with a young demography: children aged 0–17 years constitute 36% of the total population.
- In Bangladesh, the national operator, Probha Aurora, initiated the Eco-Schools programme in August 2023. This initiative is expected to build a whole-school approach framework for schools to integrate environmental education into their curriculum and operations, with the goal of creating a more sustainable future.
Scope (pilot phase)
- Target institutions: primary and secondary schools & colleges
- Geographical scope: Dhaka region
- Number of target institutions: 25 schools
The pilot phase will transition into a future strategy, encompassing all schools across Bangladesh in our Eco-Schools programme.

The Seven-Step Framework
A step-by-step process that guides schools from forming an Eco-Committee to producing an Eco-Code.
The Eco-Schools Themes
Environmental themes such as waste, water, energy, biodiversity and climate change that schools choose to work on.
Assessment for the Green Flag
Schools that complete the programme are assessed and can earn the internationally recognised Green Flag award.
To be successful, the programme requires support from school leaders and the Board. Active involvement of staff is imperative, as well as long-term commitment and the willingness to involve students in decision-making.
A comprehensive guide for schools
A comprehensive guide that helps schools implement sustainable practices and engage students in environmental stewardship.
Form an Eco-Committee
Students, staff and community members come together to lead the programme.
Carry out an Environmental Review
Assess the school’s current environmental performance to find priorities.
Make an Action Plan
Set clear goals, actions and timelines based on the review.
Monitor & Evaluate
Track progress and measure the impact of the actions taken.
Link to the Curriculum
Bring environmental topics into lessons across subjects.
Inform & Involve
Share activities and involve the whole school and wider community.
Produce an Eco-Code
Agree a mission statement that captures the school’s commitment.
